TRIVIA :
  • The Great Mouse Detective is the 26th "Disney Classics".
  • Loosely based on the series of the books by Eve Titus titled "Basil of Baker Street", itself inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's books "Sherlock Holmes"; the name Basil was chosen after actor Basil Rathbone, who is famous for portraying Sherlock Holmes in 14 films from 1939 to 1946.

  • The film was first to be titled after the book, "Basil of Baker Street", but following a screen test with children, Disney marketing thought this would sound “too British for American kids” and claimed "The Great Mouse Detective" was a better title. Re-dubbing the film with American accents for the United States release was even considered at one point.
This lead to the animators making a fake memo, falsely attributed to vice president of Disney Feature Animation Peter Schneider who opted for the more generic title. The memo stated that other Disney classics would also be renamed, such as “Seven Little Men Help a Girl” (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), “The Wonderful Elephant Who Could Really Fly” (Dumbo) and “The Girl with the See Through Shoes” (Cinderella). A copy was leaked to the Los Angeles Times, which made Jeff Katzenberg, then-CEO of Disney, furious and held what some called an “inquisition”. Ed Gombert, the author of the memo, was never denounced by his colleague, and the memo’s content even ended up as a category on the game show Jeopardy.

  • Michael Eisner originally wanted Michael Jackson to perform the song at the tavern, then proposed Madonna for the part.
It's eventually singer Melissa Manchester, who became popular the year before, who was brought in, wrote and sang “Let Me Be Good To You”.

  • This is one of the rare Disney classics not to be dubbed into Icelandic and European Portuguese.
  • It is unknown if a Slovak dub of the movie really exist.
