TRIVIA :
  • Mulan was given a sequel in 2004, "Mulan II", and a live-action remake in 2020, "Mulan".
  • The film was a flop in China, grossing barely $30,000 in Mulan's home province Hunan. Mulan was also described as too "foreign looking" by the audience, calling her "Foreign Mulan" (洋花木兰), and complaining about the lack of knowledge about Chinese culture.
This wasn't helped by the fact China only allowed 10 foreign films per years, and delayed Mulan's screening to February 1999, right after schools re-opened following Chinese New Year, the biggest holiday of the year. This delay is said to be due to Disney's 1997 release of "Kundun," a movie which recounted the life of the Dalai Lama and China's occupation of Tibet, which the Middle Empire found politically provocative; as well as the desire to protect the struggling local film industry.
